A Macmillan English Campus Case Study: ITESM in Mexico

Since 2005, the Macmillan English Campus has been in use by the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) in Mexico, and it's been embraced by students and staff.

Arturo Hernández, Director of the Foreign Language Department, Undergraduate level, at the Guadalajara Campus reports on why and how it's been such a success.

“Macmillan English Campus (MEC) has certainly made a difference in five campuses (Guadalajara, Colima, León, Sonora Norte and Ciudad Obregón) from the Western Zone of the ITESM and on Laguna Campus in the Northern Zone.

The insertion of MEC was not just another tool in the classroom. Instead, it has become the perfect teaching companion that has allowed teachers to integrate their talent and creativity along with blended learning into a whole new experience. It is currently used in various ways such as an option for a workbook, an opportunity to develop autonomous learning outside the classroom and as a clear example of the use of technology in language learning.

Beyond its use with students, MEC has recently been proposed as an alternative to those employees who, despite time limitations affecting their attendance of a face-to-face English course, want to continue improving their language skills. Its flexibility, variety of activities, especially the games, the use of the Macmillan English Dictionary Online and the TOEFL® exercises have made MEC part of the academic life on our campuses.

MEC's flexibility is probably the most valued feature by our institution. The fact that it can be adapted to the syllabuses and textbook series used by the Foreign Language Department at undergraduate level, and allows users to practise exercises for different levels, has made it the most adaptable and technological language learning platform available in the market. Its new version not only presents an updated design and easier navigation but also an additional means of communication between the student and the instructor through its new message function.

In sum, MEC has come to Tec de Monterrey to stay – and to change the way learning should happen. MEC has been warmly welcomed by the ITESM in Mexico and we are glad to have found a technological learning alternative that contributes to achieving our Mission 2015. We believe the use of MEC sits perfectly with the educational principles of our institution which has always been concerned about offering and maintaining high educational and quality standards.”
