The Macmillan English Campus in Switzerland

The Macmillan English Campus is a now a truly global service, with over 85,000 students and teachers using it as an online resource in the United States, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Europe.

Focus on Switzerland

Recently, the Macmillan English Campus was on show in Switzerland, at the 23rd Annual Convention of ETAS (the English Teachers Association of Switzerland). ETAS is the largest English-speaking association in Switzerland with over 1,400 members based in universities, state schools, private schools and business schools.

The two-day conference was held in the beautiful Baroque city of Solothurn (see image, right), and attracted over 400 delegates from every part of
the country.

In addition to the Macmillan stand, where interested ETAS teachers were offered one-to-one demonstrations of the product, regional Sales Manager Byron Russell gave a 75 minute workshop on the English Campus, which was attended by a large number of conference delegates.

Blended Learning in Switzerland

The use of computer-based technologies in the language classroom is a topic of increasing importance in Switzerland, with many institutions considering how best to implement ICT into their own teaching practice. The presentation at ETAS demonstrated how the English Campus can be integrated into current classroom teaching to create a true blended learning programme.

There is already an enthusiastic base of English Campus users in Switzerland. The English Campus was adopted in 2005 by OPTI (the Office de perfectionnement scolaire, de transition et d’insertion), a state project within the Vaud Canton. Over 700 students are regularly using the English Campus and it is already proving to be a highly motivating method of engaging with English language training.

The Macmillan English Campus is also in use in private language institutions such as Hull’s School in Zurich, and is being considered for adoption by several universities.
